More and more professionals – and clients – are looking at life insurance as an asset. Depending on the type of life insurance, many are viewing it as an asset class. They are treating it like an asset, utilizing it like an asset, integrating and coordinating it with their other assets and asset classes.

This is going to be a very new and very exciting event! Jamie L. Mendelsohn, Executive Vice President, Ashar Group, is a nationally known expert in the life insurance/life settlement marketplace. She is “the expert’s expert” and is one of country’s leading professionals in this very exciting field!

Everyone has heard of life settlements, maybe viatical settlements, or simply monetizing or selling a life insurance policy in the so-called marketplace. We see commercials on TV about it. However, life settlements are the most revolutionary area in the financial services world. This is not about simply selling a policy or a TV commercial. There is much more than that going on in the wealth management world, both inside and outside an estate planning context. The life settlement marketplace represents not just an important option, not just an ever-increasing option, but a possible mandatory option! Not just insureds or policy owners! Yes, life insurance is a mainstay in the estate planning arena. However, it is even more of a mainstay in the business planning, business succession/buy-sell planning world. What about non-qualified deferred compensation? What about trustees? Attorneys? Accountants? Where is the professional and ethical responsibility that any professional might have in this discussion?

While times and circumstances are always changing, so is tax law, and so it the landscape of the estate planning and life insurance world. How policies are valued and how they are monetized, could not be more different. All of us as professionals must be educated, aware, and understand how policies are valued and how they can be monetized – and potentially monetized for more than their cash surrender value! The valuation of existing policies can reveal an unrecognized asset. Depending on the type of policy, more and more banks are “lending” against the cash value of life insurance. Most professionals aren’t aware or don’t truly understand this. Even if a client has simply outlived their “need” for their life insurance, or the life insurance no longer serves its original purpose, or needs to be replaced – monetizing the policy for more than the cash surrender value must be looked at! Whatever the reason may be, this is an opportunity to look at an alternative and potentially profitable exit strategy – the life settlement marketplace.

Jamie L. Mendelsohn is the Executive Vice President of Ashar Group - a family-owned business that operates and does business throughout the United States.
